IN DEPTH ANSWER: Although the Steiff Company designed its bear at the same time as the "Teddy's Bear" was catching on in the United States, there was no connection between the two ideas. The Steiff Company's idea came from Margarete Steiff's nephew, Richard Steiff. Richard had an idea to make a toy bear standing upright after seeing performing bears at a touring American circus. Until that time, toy bears were made standing on all four legs.
